Personal life
Hamasaki was known to keep herself to herself and avoid direct engagement with fans. Since her fame reached Western countries she became inundated with comments and messages on her blogs and as a result stopped posting on her official blog in January 2014.
After she retired in 2011, her activity was reduced to modelling and re-releases of video content as well as occasional blog posts. By 2014 she disappeared from the spotlight completely to reemerge in 2015 on Facebook with a page dedicated to modelling. In June 2016 she deleted her page from Facebook and changed her personal profile privacy to private and started using her real name.
AV career
In October 2006 Hamasaki debuted in the Japanese AV industry as Erika Morishita when she was 18 years old. She had previously been working as a check out clerk in a petrol station for six months. One month later, she appeared in her first starring video, Busty Rio Hamasaki 18 Years Old (巨乳 浜崎りお 18歳), one of the first set of videos produced by the new AV company "eighteen".
In her extensive AV career, Hamasaki performed in videos for many of the major Japanese adult video studios including SOD, Moodyz, Crystal-Eizou, Wanz Factory and Dogma. In July 2008, Hamasaki appeared in the Glory Quest video Big Tits Loving Grandfather Erotic Mischief 2 (ボイン大好き亀市爺さんのHなイタズラ 弐) with "elder porn" star Shigeo Tokuda. In August 2011, Hamasaki announced on her blog and later in an interview with Cyzo magazine that she planned to retire in October 2011 after five years in the adult video industry and would have a live retirement event on October 29. Her "retirement video" Rio Hamasaki - Debut and 1933 Days, AV Retirement (浜崎りおDebut~1933日そして、引退 AV女優最後の日にプライベートまで密着 完全撮りおろし), a five-hour retrospective of her AV career, was released by Soft On Demand in March 2012. However, in February 14, 2014, Hamasaki appeared in an online show speculating about a possible comeback.
When the major Japanese adult video distributor DMM held a poll of its customers in 2012 to choose the 100 all-time best AV actresses to celebrate the 30th anniversary of adult videos in Japan, Hamasaki was voted into 26th place.
