Rifat atun of the global fund to fight aids tb and malaria on healthcare policy


Rifat Atun is a professor of Global Health Systems at Harvard University, where he is the Director of Global Health Systems Cluster at the Harvard School of Public Health. In 2006–13, Atun was Professor of International Health Management and Head of the Health Management Group at Imperial College. He holds a position as an adjunct professor of Global Health Systems and an honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is the joint lead for the innovation work streams at the National Centre for Infection Prevention and Management. From 2008–12 he was a member of the Executive Management Team of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as the Director of Strategy, Performance and Evaluation Cluster. He chairs Eastern Healthcare Partners, a start-up focused on combating non-communicable chronic diseases.

Career

At Imperial, Atun founded and led the Center for Health Management: a multidisciplinary research group undertaking international and UK based research exploring how contextual and health system factors influence the adoption and diffusion of innovations (for example communicable disease control programs, primary health care reforms and new health care technologies). He has published in The Lancet, PLoS Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, BMJ, AIDS and Bulletin of the World Health Organization.

Atun has worked extensively with the World Bank, World Health Organization and the UK Department for International Development on design, implementation and evaluation of health system reform programs in more than 20 countries. He has led research and consultancy projects for organizations such as Pfizer Inc., the Vodafone Group, Hofmann La Roche, PA Consulting and Tata Consulting Services. Atun has advised a number of governments in Europe, Latin America, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Atun was the Founding Director of the MSc in International Health Management, BSc in Management and Medical Science, and Founding Co-Director of the Masters in Public Health Program at Imperial College. He served as director of Imperial College spin out companies, operating in areas of health informatics and biotechnology.

Atun was a member of the Strategic Technical Advisory Group of the World Health Organization for Tuberculosis and chaired the WHO Task Force on Health Systems and Tuberculosis Control. Between 2006–08 he was a Member of the Advisory Committee for WHO Research Centre for Health Development in Japan. In 2009–12 he was the Chair of the STOP TB Partnership Coordinating Board. Atun is a member of the MRC Global Health Group as the MRC Infections and Immunity Board representative. Atun serves as a member of the PEPFAR Scientific Advisory Board, a member of the Norwegian Research Council's Global Health and Vaccination Research (GLOBVAC) Board, a member of the Advisory Board for Merck for Mothers and a member of the Research Advisory Committee for the Public Health Foundation of India. Atun is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians UK.
