History

In German the word Rieselfeld means sewage farm, and this is exactly how the area started in 1891 when the leaders of Freiburg bought the area of 5 square kilometres from the University of Freiburg. After the Second World War the land was used to house Sinti and Jenische. The locality was founded after the town had completed an urban planning competition, the "Urban Development Competition Rieselfeld" (German: „Städtebaulicher Wettbewerb Rieselfeld“). The first houses were constructed in 1994.

Modern day Rieselfeld

At the end of 2005, the Rieselfeld already had 6810 inhabitants and is planned to have between 10.000 and 20.000 by 2010. The locality has two schools (a primary school and a Gymnasium). Rieselfeld is also served by several buses and a tram line.
