Biography

Jay is a self-taught musician. He began writing music at age 14 and left school at 16 to train at a local recording studio as a sound engineer.

Jay has written a book on the music industry titled How to Get Your Music in Film & TV.

Works and media appearances

Jay's debut album, This Is What I Live For, was released in 2009 on Burning Petals Records. The album featured guest performances from members of Britain's longest-established symphony orchestra, The Halle, as well as from Grammy Award-winning uilleann pipes player Davy Spillane.

This Is What I Live For was reviewed in MUSO magazine and has received attention from leading music blogs The Silent Ballet and Headphone Commute.

His second album as Richard Anthony Jay, Imperfect Beauty, was released on July 4, 2011; also on Burning Petals Records. Chris Buckle of The Skinny compared it to the work of Mike Oldfield. Some tracks from Imperfect Beauty were previously released by Jay under the pseudonym "Marble Hill", a side project incorporating chill-out and classical influences. Tracks from this project were selected by British Phonographic Industry for their 'British Music at MIDEM 2007' CD and by Phunctional Loungin for their 'Champagne Loungin Vol.4' release.

In 2011, Jay was interviewed on the radio program Echoes, where he spoke about his album Imperfect Beauty. He was also featured in an interview on Classic FM. Jay's work has been heard on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, BBC Radio 2, and regional BBC Radio programming. His work has also been ranked in the top 20 on Zone Music Reporter's airplay charts and on DMC World Magazine's weekly charts. His music has been heard in TV shows such as BBC's Top Gear and Sky TV's Obese: A Year to Save My Life

In 2015, Jay released a digital E.P Written In The Ground, collaborated with choreographer Jack Philp on a new dance work and wrote the score to Catherine Linstrum's short film Things That Fall From The Sky.
