Professional career

In 2002, Carter joined the Victoria Giants as a development player for the 2002–03 season. In 2003, he signed a full contract with the Giants for the 2003–04 season.

In 2005, Carter signed with the West Sydney Razorbacks and played with them until 2008.

In July 2008, Carter signed with the South Dragons for the 2008–09 NBL season, going on to average 8.0 points, 2.1 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game in the Dragons' championship winning season.

In 2010, Carter signed with the Adelaide 36ers for the 2010–11 NBL season, going on to average 8.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in 22 games for the 36ers. He missed six games during the season due to a back injury which also limited his court time upon return.

In May 2011, Carter signed a two-year deal with Uppsala Basket of Sweden. Carter finished his first year with Uppsala Basket averaging 15.7 points, 5.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals in 41 games. In January 2013, he left Sweden and returned to Australia where he signed with the Perth Wildcats for the rest of the 2012–13 NBL season. On 24 February 2013, Carter played in his 200th NBL game, recording 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in a 97-71 victory over the Sydney Kings.

In November 2013, Carter signed with Eco Örebro of Sweden for the 2013–14 season. In January 2014, he left Örebro after appearing in 12 games.

On 12 February 2014, Carter signed with the Adelaide 36ers for the rest of the 2013–14 NBL season, replacing import forward Jarrid Frye.

On 1 August 2014, Carter signed a one-year deal with the New Zealand Breakers.

On 19 August 2015, Carter signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Kings.
