recs of the flesh is a noise rock band from Sardinia. The band consists of Massimo Usai (electric guitar/vocals), Sara Melis (keyboards), Petr Studihrad (drums) and Federico Loche (bass guitar).

Contents

The band started out as a solo project in 2004, when Massimo Usai sought an outlet for his vision-driven high temperature fever, inspired by William S. Burroughs' novel The Soft Machine. Their sound has been compared to bands such as Sonic Youth, Killing Joke, Queens Of The Stone Age and Placebo in reviews [2][3][4]. All band members met on the internet, with the notable exception of Massimo and Sara, who met while Usai was working as a sound tech at a drag queen show in summer 2006. Xavier was found drumming on his YouTube channel [5] while Justin and Massimo met at the official Sonic Youth Gossip Boards.

In 2010, Massimo and Sara moved to Prague, where Usai was granted access to Faust Records studios for an internship. The duo encountered drummer Petr Studihrad as he was recording for local punk legends Visací zámek. Highly impressed by his skills, Usai asked Studihrad to perform on recs of the flesh's new album. After listening to some rough demos, Studihrad agreed and joined the band. Bass player Federico Loche was asked to join the line-up shortly before the sessions for the second album were completed.

Music

recs of the flesh has a sound based on dissonant guitar riffing, distorted keyboards, hard pounding drum lines, a very present bass and an urgent vocal delivery. Their songs, while dealing with experimental sound textures, apply to a somewhat standard verse/chorus/verse structure. The themes treated in lyrics often refer to psychological conditions and confusional states of the mind.

After several different line up changes and the recording of two demo CDs - Introducing Apophenia (2006) and Cigarette Secrets (2007) - Usai and Melis started preproduction for a full length release in early 2008. The band recorded their first full length album, Illusory Fields Of Unconsciousness, during August 2008, when Dilme traveled from his native Catalunya to Sardinia, in order to lay down the drum lines in the band's home studio, The Crimson Dome. In the meanwhile, Wood started working on bass in St. Paul, Minnesota. The band was able to put together the tracks via online tools such as videocalls and instant messaging services.

The band's second album, The Threat Remains And Is Very Real, had drums recorded by Petr Studihrad in Prague at Faust Records with the help of Recording engineer Derek Saxenmeyer during September 2010, with all other instruments recorded in Sardinia. Usai handled bass as well as guitars and vocals, while Melis handled keyboards and helped with the arrangement of vocal harmonies.

The sound presented in their albums has been described as a blend of several genres, and found the press dealing with the heavy delivery of the band's tonal explorations: "It's not often these days that an album hits as hard as this one. There are death metal bands out there who can only dream of making as much sonic impact as Recs of the Flesh do"[6].
