Ratna Kumar Bantawa (Nepali:रत्न कुमार बान्तावा) was a Nepalese Communist politician and a Martyr. He was active during the Panchayat rule in Nepal and was martyred by the Panchayati government. He was born on 2007 B.S. Chaitra 27 at Chamaita VDC's Chitre village in Ilam district.

Background

He did primary schooling in Ilam district and Panchthar district. Afterwards, he attained Higher education at Dharan and Kathmandu.

Career

He was influenced by Jhapa Aandolan as a kid. After completing B.Ed. from T.U. in 2032 B.S., he was involved in teaching profession. Later, he joined CPN-ML and went for underground protest against Panchayat rule. He was member of central committee of CPN-ML Bantawa was killed at Ibhang VDC, Illam on 2035 B.S. Chaitra 27 by Panchayat Government. His brother Bam Prasad Bantawa was also killed.

Popularity and Legacy

Novelist Sanjay Thapa wrote a novel Deumai ko Kinarma on the real lifestory of Bantawa. A movie was made on the novel too.

The Fikkal-Pashupatinagar Highway was named Ratna Kumar Bantawa Highway.

Ratna Kumar Bantawa Polytechnic Institute is established in Sakhejung VDC. On his memory, Ratna-Bam Pratisthan was also instituted.
