Career

Ras started making pause-tapes form his favorite radio shows The Baka Boyz’ Friday Night Flavas and Da Joint with King Emz and Mike Nardone when he was in high school. After impressing friends with his tapes, he decided to save up for Technic 1200 turntables and started DJing. After spending some time DJing Ras saved up for an Emu SP-12 sampler and started teaching himself how to make beats.

Ras G released Brotha from Anotha Planet in 2009. His solo album, Down 2 Earth, was released on Ramp Recordings in 2011. He released the free EP, Ainat, in 2012. He released Back on the Planet on Brainfeeder in 2013. Pitchfork writer Miles Raymer said of the album, "Back on the Planet is filled with soothing arrangements of gently pulsing drums, echo-blurred keys, and the occasional sub-bass boom," giving it a 7.8 out of 10 rating.

On December 2nd, 2016 Ras G released his Baker's Dozen album.According to Ras much of the album was produced on the iMPC app on his iPhone during bus and train rides.
When asked to describe the texture of his own music, Ras said "It’s the feeling I’m just channeling. I don’t know how I’m making this music per se. I never went to a music school, I never know what you need to know for music, all I know is the feeling of music and how it should be."
Equipment
Though he started making beats with an SP-12, today he uses the Roland SP-303 and 404, an MPC 2000, and the iMPC app on his phone. Though he doesn't use the SP-12 anymore, he has said that "the SP-12 enlightened me to metronomes and time signatures." He has said that his favorite sampler is the SP-404 because, "It’s pre-Maschine, it’s nothing to look at. It’s all based on ears and feelings." When making beats with his iMPC app Ras likes using field recordings for samples. "The stuff I sample on the iMPC with my phone is random. I’m sampling stuff that I’m hearing in the world," he said.
