Randy Lennox Bell Media taps music industry veteran to lead production

Lennox first joined Universal Music as a customer service representative. He later worked as Ontario's Branch Manager for Universal, then as the company's vice-president of sales and marketing.

In 1998, when Universal Music Canada merged with Polygram Canada Inc, Lennox was serving as Universal Music's General Manager. Following the merger, Lennox was appointed as the amalgamated company's President.

In January 2001 his role was expanded and he was appointed the Universal Music Canada's Chief Executive Officer. Under Lennox's leadership, Universal Music Canada has been named ‘Record Company of the Year’ for 16 consecutive years at Canadian Music Week.

Lennox holds many board positions on industry organizations: He has served on the Juno Awards committee. He is also the talent chair and executive producer of Canada's Walk of Fame and is the chair of the Massey & Roy Thompson Hall’s Board. He also sits on the boards of both CARAS and Music Canada.

    Media & broadcasting

    On August 25, 2015 Lennox was appointed as president of entertainment production and broadcasting for Bell Media.

    At Bell Media, Lennox secured the expansion of US-based internet radio streaming service IHeartRadio into the Canadian market through Bell Media. The service launched on Monday, October 10, 2016 with access to hundreds of stations including Virgin Radio, TSN Radio, as well as music, news/talk, comedy, and sports content from the over 105 English and French radio stations owned by Bell Media, as well as over 100 curated channels.

    Lennox also began developing a number of new media properties including:

  • The Beaverton, a half-hour comedy news adaptation of the hit Canadian satire blog The Beaverton which aired its first episode on November 9, 2016;
  • Frontier, Discovery Canada's first scripted series, starring Jason Momoa; and
  • Russell Peters is the Indian Detective, a comedy starring Canadian comedian Russell Peters.
  • Cardinal, a detective drama based on Giles Blunt’s award-winning John Cardinal Mysteries, which was recently renewed for two additional seasons--a first in the Canadian market.
  • On August 2, 2016, Lennox was named Bell Media's president of broadcasting and content. Lennox has stated in interviews that his goal at Bell Media is to bring more "IP based thinking" to the company's content strategy. On September 6, 2016, Bell Media announced it was expanding into live theatre. Bat Out of Hell: The Musical is an adaptation of the iconic album by Meat Loaf, and represents Bell Media's entry into theatre production. The show is a joint production with Michael Cohl, is directed by Jay Sheib, and debuts January 2017.

    In February 2017, it was announced that Lennox had signed a deal with Scott Borchetta—founder of Big Machine Label Group and the media executive who signed Taylor Swift, as well as a regular guest and coach on American Idol—to create a new talent search television program for Bell Media to find, develop, and promote musical talent.

    On February 27, 2017, Lennox was named President of Bell Media, after Mary Ann Turcke left to join the NFL.

    Charitable involvement

    Lennox is a director of the Smilezone Foundation, a Canadian charity that aims to improve the lives of children facing illness, disabilities, physical and emotional obstacles. He also sits on the board of CARAS MusiCounts, a music education charity.

    For the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, Lennox executive produced CTV’s official anthem for the games that was recorded by Canadian artist Nikki Yanofsky and produced by Stephan Moccio.

    Lennox's Oh What a Feeling: A Vital Collection of Canadian Music, sold more than a million albums while raising $5.2 million for Canadian charities the Starlight Foundation, Safe Haven and MusiCounts.

    In August 2016, Lennox and other leaders of industry from Barclays, and NBC Universal, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, and Bell Canada raised more than $300,000 for Music Under the Stars, a national charity that celebrates and inspires Canadian excellence.

    On September 2016 under Lennox, Bell Media became a sponsor of Global Citizen, an international NGO dedicated to eradicating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, to host a live concert featuring Usher, Half Moon Run, Metric, Grimes, and Charlotte Cardin as well as speeches by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

    Young Artists for Haiti

    Along with industry veterans Bob Ezrin and Gary Slaight, Lennox founded Young Artists for Haiti, a movement to engage Canada's young musicians to continue to inspire an ongoing effort and contribution to Canadian charities for their work to help the people of Haiti overcome the devastation from the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country on January 12, 2010.

    Participants included Justin Bieber, Jully Black, Pierre Bouvier from Simple Plan, Broken Social Scene, Tyler Connelly from Theory of a Deadman, Fefe Dobson, Drake, Elisapie, Esthero, Nelly Furtado, Kardinal Offishall, The Tenors, Emily Haines from Metric, Jacob Hoggard from Hedley, Ima, Chin Injeti, Pierre Lapointe, Avril Lavigne, Lights, Matt Mays, Justin Nozuka, Kardinal Offishall, Sam Roberts, Serena Ryder, Deryck Whibley from Sum 41, Hawksley Workman and Nikki Yanofsky.

    The group sang the song "Wavin' Flag," and raised over $2 million for Haitian disaster relief. As of June 2015, the official video has almost 20,000,000 views on YouTube. Wavin' Flag won "Single of the Year" at the 2011 Juno Awards.

    Awards and recognition

    In February 2002, MacLean’s Magazine named Lennox as one of their ‘Most Influential Canadians.’

    On March 11, 2010, Lennox was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame as part of Canadian Music Week. That year Lennox also won a Juno Award for "Single of the Year" for producing Wavin' Flag, a single that raised over $1 million in disaster relief funds for Haiti.

    In 2014, Lennox was named International Label Executive of the Year by the Worldwide Radio Summit.

    In November 2015, Lennox was named one of the 50 most influential people living in Toronto by Toronto Life magazine.

    In January 2017 it was announced that CARAS would be presenting Lennox with the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award at the 2017 Juno Awards in recognition of his contribution to the growth and development of the Canadian music industry.
