Career
Srivastava was a 1973 batch IPS officer of the Kerala cadre. Before becoming Director General of BSF, he was Special Secretary (Internal Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Before that, he served as Director General of Police of Kerala. Former DGP Raman Srivastava has been appointed as adviser to the Chief Minister on police in Kerala
Controversy
During a communal flare-up in Kerala, he allegedly instructed his subordinates that he wanted "dead bodies of Muslim bastards." He was caught in a controversy following his alleged involvement in the ISRO spy ring case in the 1990s. Later, Supreme Court of India dismissed the case for being vague and baseless. He also dragged serious controversies over his alleged order, during his time in the State of Kerala as the Deputy Inspector General of Police, to the junior police officers, namely ASP Sandhya, to fire which resulted in the killing of an 11-year-old Muslim girl, Sirajunnisa
