Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (RKMVU), Coimbatore is one of the off-campus faculties of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (RKMVU), Belur Math. The conception of RKMVU was envisioned by Swami Vivekananda nearly 111 years ago, in recognition of which the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, has classified the university under the A category.

History

The Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University (RKMVU), Coimbatore is an off-campus faculty of Vivekananda University headquartered at Belur Math, Kolkata. It is on the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Campus at Coimbatore.

Administration

The Chancellor (ex-officio) of RKMVU is Swami Suhitananda, who is the General Secretary of the worldwide twin organizations, Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. The other members in the administration include Vice Chancellor, Registrar, the Administrative Head, the Asst. Administrative Head and Deans of faculties.

Disability Management and Special Education

The Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education (FDMSE) is the first off-campus faulty center of Vivekananda University. There was an institution named International Human Resource Development Center (IHRDC), dedicated to the service of the persons with disabilities in Vidyalaya. The institute was catering to the education and vocation needs of persons with disabilities since 1985. In 2005, IHRDC was absorbed into Vivekananda University and was renamed as FDMSE.

FDMSE is mainly organised into three departments and over nine units to provide support services to the departments. It attracts students from all over India as well as abroad. The intake capacity for each course is limited.

Seminars and orientation programs

FDMSE conducts orientation programs, workshops, and seminars year round. Programs are conducted almost annually under the following heads.

  • Continual rehabilitation programs (CRE) in all the three disability areas (VI, HI and MR) and cross disability.
  • National seminars regarding the issues related to disability.
  • Orientation programs in collaboration with National Institute for Visually Handicapped (NIVH) Chennai and Dehradun.
  • Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) etc.
  • Schools, colleges and institutions in and around Coimbatore visit us to gain general knowledge about disability.
  • Academic activities

    FDMSE publishes the bi-annual, peer-reviewed Journal of Disability Management and Special Education (JODMSE). Special educators and others in the field of special education contribute to the journal. It publishes original articles in disability management and special education. It includes evidence-based research articles, opinion and concept papers, book reviews, success stories of persons with disability, news about conferences, letters to the editors, and forthcoming events.

    Braille book production unit

    The braille unit of the faculty has been contributing useful books, textbooks, reference books, ballot papers, maps and other instructional materials in braille catering to the needs of a large number of persons with visual impairment throughout India.

    Faculty General & Adapted Physical Education and Yoga

    The Faculty General & Adapted Physical Education and Yoga (GAPEY) is an off-campus faulty center of Vivekananda University which started functioning since 2007 at Coimbatore. GAPEY mainly focuses on the physical educational needs of persons with disabilities.

    The Faculty of General & Adapted Physical Education and Yoga (GAPEY) offers the following post-graduate, graduate and diploma courses during the academic year in regular mode recognized by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

    Research programs
    Certificate course in Special Olympics

    Certificate course in Special Olympics is a program aimed at preparing expert coaches in the field of Adapted Physical Education. The entire program is sponsored by Special Olympics Bharat and Special Olympics Asia Pacific. The participants are typically a mixture of special and physical educators. This course is the first of its kind in India. It is mandatory for the trainees who have undergone this course to take up and organize stipulated number of project meets for special children to obtain a final certification as a Special Olympics certificate holder. Till date GAPEY produced about 240 coaches.

    The sprawling campus has fitness centre, adequate playground, both indoor and outdoor, a 400-meter track, hockey field, football field, volleyball complex, indoor stadium and two tennis tndoor stadiums.

    It has a library with about 1,00,000 books and journals.

    Unified Play festival

    Unified Play Day (UPD) is an annual play festival with equal participation of children with disabilities and those without. Every year faculty physical education trainees go forth to inclusive/special/normal schools in and around Coimbatore to train the children to participate in UPD events. The events of UPD includes adapted play items; therapy stalls like music therapy, physio-therapy, Kolam therapy (art used as a means of therapy), etc.; and awareness exhibitions regarding disability issues. There was a total participation of 1000 people in 2013-14.

    Faculty Centre for Agriculture Education and Research

    Faculty Centre for Agriculture Education and Research (FAR) is an off-campus faculty of Vivekananda University headquartered at Belur Math, Kolkata. It is in the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Campus at Coimbatore. It was started in 2014. The faculty center offers B.Sc (Agriculture), a 4-year course in Regular mode. Admission is open to boys.

    UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has created a special UNESCO chair in the area of Inclusive Adapted Physical Education and Yoga, which is a unique area of work to promote inclusion. The UNESCO chair in the area of ‘inclusive education’ at RKMVU, Coimbatore is the first of its kind in Asia.
