Muhammad Basharat Raja ( Raja Basharat) is a Pakistani politician from the city of Rawalpindi.

Biography

He is the elder son of Raja Lal Khan, a former Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab . Muhammad Basharat Raja was a member and also chairman of the district council of Rawalpindi. He was in charge of the ministry of law and Parliamentary Affairs Punjab for two consecutive terms and Member of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab for four terms.

Education and law career

He graduated from the University of the Punjab with a LLB degree in 1976. He practiced law until entering politics with a position in the district council.

Political career

Raja was elected district council chair in 1979 and served until 1987. He remained a council member from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, he was elected to the Punjab provincial assembly. He was reelected in 1993. In 1996, after winning again, he was nominated for the Ministry of Law. In 2003, after the exile of party leader Nawaz Sharif, he became a part of the remodeled Pakistan Muslim League along with a majority of other political leaders. After the 2003 general elections he was appointed as special adviser to the Chief Minister of Punjab before becoming Senior Minister for the second time after winning the by-elections from Gujrat. Along with the Law ministry he took the portfolio of Local Government, Community Development and Parliamentary Affairs & Public Prosecution. As of 2010 he served as Advisor to Prime Minister with the status of Federal Minister, for Industries and Defense Production.
