The player's character, part-slug and part-cat, uses spears and rocks to survive amongst larger animals in ruins of technologically advanced civilisation. Game begins with the Slugcat being separated from its family by a thunder strike. In order to find family and discover truth about the game's world Slugcat has to travel through the interconnected world, evade predators, look for food, and shelter from the crushing rain. Slugcat has a limited time to travel through locations before rain starts to fall. During rainfall slugcat has to hibernate in hibernation chambers but in order to survive hibernation it has to eat enough food beforehand. Hibernation chambers serve as the only save points in the game. Game also has "Karma Gate System": Some special gates open only when the player has high enough or low enough "Karma".
