Early career

Born in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina, he first played with his hometown club FK Sutjeska Foča in the First League of the Republika Srpska before moving to Serbian side FK Donji Srem during the winter break of the 2012–13 Serbian SuperLiga. In August 2014 he moved to Hellas Verona, but was immediately sent back on a 6-month loan to Donji Srem. When Hellas Verona began its off-season winter training in January 2015, Krunić did not show up and the coach had no idea of his whereabouts, after which Hellas Verona threatened to register a complaint with UEFA and FIFA. Donji Srem, the team to which Krunić was loaned from Verona, paid a compensation fee for Krunić's absence.

During the winter transfer window of 2014–15, Krunić came close to signing with Red Star Belgrade, but the transfer fell through for disuputed reasons. Krunić claimed that agent Stevan Stojanović (former Red Star goalkeeper) stopped the transfer to Red Star for his own interests, indicating that Red Star was offering a less desirable percentage of the transfer to him. On 30 January 2015, it was announced that Krunić joined Borac Čačak. After Krunić's promotion at Borac, his former club Donji Srem filed a complaint to the Football Association of Serbia, and criticized the Association for pressuring them to break FIFA rules in regards to Verona's legal grievances about Krunić.
Empoli
On 30 June 2015, Krunić signed with Empoli.
International career

His regularity and good performances in the SuperLiga were noticed by the Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 coach Vlado Jagodić who called him for the matches against Hungary and Austria, played on 5 and 9 September respectively, for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. He made his debut for the Bosnian under-21 team as a substitute in a match against Hungary, on 5 September 2013.

He debuted for the seni0r Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in a friendly 2-2 (4-3) penalty shootout win over Denmark for the 2016 Kirin Cup.

On 3 November, he received his first call-up to the senior side by Mehmed Baždarević for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs against Republic of Ireland.
