Funded as a Carnegie library and designed in the Beaux Arts architecture style, the building is credited to architect John Mauran and builder A.H. Harcus & Co. The building served as Racine's public library until 1958 and has housed the Racine Heritage Museum since 1963. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1981.
