History

Shortly after the College of the North Atlantic Qatar (CNA-Q) opened its doors, a school providing the Canadian curriculum was requested by many parents who worked at CNA-Q. Qatar Canadian School (QCS) was therefore established with permission and monies were granted from the State of Qatar. It was founded in 2006 and relocated in 2007 to accommodate a student population that grew to over 300 students. While the school was initially designed to educate the children of CNA-Q expatriates with a Canadian curriculum, the school is now open to students of faculty from the University of Calgary, Qatar (UCQ) as well. On June 26, 2014, Qatar Canadian School had its first graduating class.

Education

QCS follows the Alberta Curriculum as well as a curriculum outlined by the Supreme Education Council Qatar, and follows the rulings of the SEC. QCS grants Alberta high school diplomas to students based on a credit system. To complete senior high, students must be awarded 100 credits. Students are awarded credits for each course they complete with satisfactory results. In addition, Grade 12 students must write and pass diploma examinations in core subject areas to complete the graduation requirements. Diploma examinations are provincially administered and account for 30 percent of the students' final grades in a given course. Alberta's High School diploma is recognized across North America and throughout the world. High school graduates have the opportunity to continue their education at Alberta's post secondary institutions or to attend universities and colleges across the world.

Admission

English competency is a requirement for acceptance. Entry to all age groups at QCS is by selection, in the form of an application, academic screening, receipt of satisfactory reports, and/or an interview. The applicant may be required to take a standardized test, for English and Math grade level competencies.

Location

QCS is located in Doha, Qatar. It is in the Al-Markhiya region (Gharaffa). The building can be distinguished by surrounding building by the two flag poles raised with Qatari Flags.

Facilities

Despite its small size, QCS provides a comprehensive academic program. QCS offers teaching spaces that include:

  • A Learning Commons - that joins the library with the computer area
  • A Science Lab - offering programs in physics, chemistry, and biology
  • A Foods Lab - offering a nutritional literacy program
  • A Fine Arts Space - offering Theatre Arts and Music
  • Although QCS has an outdoor area and an inner courtyard, most physical education classes are conducted off site at the CNA-Q.

    Faculty

QCS staff are Canadian Certified teachers who have teaching experience in Canada. Since QCS is accredited by the province of Alberta, teachers certification is registered and reviewed by Alberta Education.
