Putlacheruvu

Geography

The village of Putlacheruvu is located 6 km from Kolleru Lake and consists of three areas: Krishnapuram, Ramapuram, and Putlacheruvu proper. It features a 7.5 acre freshwater lake with a Naandi Foundation water treatment plant (which is a small failure )and a 12 foot tall statue of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the south end of the lake. There are three large canals off the Krishna river on both ends of the village. One of these is used for drinking water and the other two are sewage canals used for pumping water into the fish tanks. The soil is very rich and suitable for many crops including rice and coconut. The local wildlife includes parrots, sparrows, minas, and black crows. In the evenings and early mornings, snake birds form up in large migrations.

History

The word Putlacheruvu is derived from "Puttalu Cherevu", the name given to it by its original inhabitants because of its rich fertile land with small lakes, ponds, coconut trees, snakes and ant hills.there are many key people in developing the village

Population & economy

Putlacheruvu has approximately 2500 inhabitants and around 1200 homes. The economy -originally based on a mixture of rice cultivation and fish farming- has since 2007 completely converted to fish farming due to the better returns. The town has a milk booth (Palla Kendram) which collects milk from the villagers. Every Sunday the village center hosts a market selling fresh fish, chicken and mutton.

Transport

Putlacheruvu has an attractive railway station, surrounded by lush trees and fresh air from the lakes. The nearest large town at around 20 km is Gudivada to which the village is connected by road and rail.

Religion & festivals

The majority of the people in this village are Hindus (97%) while the rest of the population are converted Christians (3%) and Muslims (0%). There are ten places of worship: a Ganesha temple, two Sri Rama temples, a Shirdi sai baba temple, two Hanuman temples, two Gangallama temples and two Christian churches, Newly Built Shivalayam, and Sri Vijaya Kanakadurgamma temples. Major festivals include Sankranthi, Dasara Navaratrullu, Gangallamma jatara, Vinayakachavathi, Hanuman Jayanthi, Sri Rama Navami, Shivarathri and Deepaval.

Education

There is a government school which good staff(teaches)teaching from kindergarten to 10th class. Most of the graduates from this village are now settled in different parts of the country, with the majority in Vijayawada, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh and city of Hyderabad, capital city of Telangana State.
