Punjab Kesari (English: The Lion of Punjab) is 1938 Tamil Thriller film was directed by Fram Sethna. The film was inspired by Te. Po. Krishnasami Pavalar Successful Stage play PunjabKesari. The film script were written by Te. Po. Krishnasami Pavalar. Music composed by Carnatic Musician Thyagarajan. The film starring K. P. Kesavan played titled role(Punjab Kesari), T. N. Meenakshi P. U. Chinnappa and Kali N. Rathnam played lead role with A. K. Rajalakshmi , K. K. Perumal, T. R. B. Rao and J. Suseela Devi played portraying supporting role.

Plot

It is about a freedom loving man named Punjab Kesari(K. P. Kesavan) a detective and his assistant(Kali N. Rathnam), who calls himself by a usual name Karappanpoochi. Sundaranathan(P. U. Chinnappa) is a young man in love with a young women Padma Bai(A. K. Rajalakshmi), the daughter of rich man Somanathan Prabhu(H. H. Sarma). The rich man decides to get his daughter married to the young man but there is a villain(K. K. Perumal), who covets her and her wealth with a gang behind him. They kill the rich man and foist the murder on the Sundaranathan. He goes to prison and a king Doctor(Kannan) engages the detective Punjab Kesari to find out the truth. Punjab Kesari and his assistant unmask the killer and the truth. Sudaranathan and Padma Bai marry and live happily.

    Te. Po. Krsihnasamy Pavalar, one of his play in Tamil Cinema Punjab Kesari which was successfully staged all over the Tamil speaking areas of the old Madras Presidency and also neighbouring nations like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Burma also garned much fame and name during the 30s. The title bears an allegorical reference to one of the forgotton leaders of the Indian Freedom movements Lala Lajpat Rai, known as The Lion of Punjab with the success of the play, this was made into a Tamil movie in 1938.

    Soundtrack

    The film opening song Vanthey Matharam Tamilians are urged to participate in the freedom struggle. Interestingly there is a carnatic music composed Thyagaraja Tholi nenuchesina pooja palam.
