Puerto Bolivar is part of the municipality of Machala, El Oro Province, Ecuador. Puerto Bolívar is one of the world's largest shipment points for bananas, most of them destined for Europe; about 80% of Ecuador's banana production is shipped through these port facilities.

The port was named in honor of Simón Bolívar (1783-1830).

Puerto Bolívar during the Ecuador-Peruvian War

During the Ecuadorian–Peruvian War, the Peruvian army had established a paratrooper unit and used it to great effect by seizing the Ecuadorian port city of Puerto Bolívar, on July 27, 1941, marking the first time in the Americas that airborne troops were used in combat.
