Puerta Real is an historic area of Granade (Spain) that involves Recogidas St, Reyes Católicos St and Carrera de la Virgen. This place is located in the city centre. Puerta Real a meeting point and a touristic place for those who visit Granade.

History
It was named after the visit of the king Felipe IV on the 8th of April 1624. According to the documents, he did it during a tough storm through the gate of El Rastro or of La Paja, open in the muslim defensive wall, which was known as Bib-al-Rambla, that would become the centric square of the social Granadine life since the 16th century. In 1515 it was decorated with the Catholic Kings’ shield. In 1610, a new modification added the new national symbols reminding the Reconquest.
Puerta Real has suffered many changes during its life. Until the 19th century, Darro river ran through it, and so did through Reyes Catolicos Street, but it was boarded up for hygiene reasons. Until that moment, granadine social life was developed in Elvira Street and Nueva Square, but when this happened Puerta Real became more popular.
Several commercial establishments were set up in Puerta Real, being the most relevant building the Casino, already disappeared.
Areas inside Puerta Real
Another important place was the Swiss Café, located next to Mesones Street, built in the late 19th Century as well.
Another area inside Puerta Real is Genil Avenue, named like this because it was built over Genil River. At the end of this street, we can find the place where Genil River and Darro River meet. Along this avenue, it is placed Nuestra Señora de las Angustias Church, the virgin of Granada.
