Pudumadam is a village in Ramanathapuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located of National Highway 47 in road Rameshwaram. Pudumadam is 4 km from Uchippuli which is on the National Highway 49 (NH 49). NH 49 runs from Kochi to Rameswaram. The nearest railway station is Uchippuli but express trains do not stop here. The closest town is Ramanathapuram and is 25 km from Pudumadam. Pudumadam is an isthmus (Thin stretch of land that connects two larger land masses with water on both sides)

Fishing
Pudumadam being a coastal village had fishing as its primary occupation. Some were traders running businesses in Sri Lankan mainland which is only tens of nautical miles from here.
Emigration
Later on people started moving out of the village in search of better livelihood. Most of them ended up as labourers in Gulf countries as most people of Pudumadam never gave education a good try. Some earned their living by acting as travel agents and proprietors for well known footwear industries all over India.
Education
Pudumadam Higher Secondary School (Early, it was Pudumadam High School) has developed lots of scholars in different functions which includes Medicine, Engineers etc.,. It is one of the higher secondary school in that surrounding holds the basic facilities of the education. Recent days, youngsters from Pudumadam are concentrating towards the importance of education & also marching towards growth. As a sign of educational revolution you can see the graduates working in various field worldwide.
Religion
The village population is predominantly Muslims. They constitute around 85% and the remaining 15% are Hindus and Christians.The Muslim community have three Jamaaths namely 1) South Street Jamath 2) North Street Jamaath 3) Middle Street Jamaath Each Jamaath has a masjid of its own, mostly built from contributions from members of the respective Jamaaths.Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath also successfully constructed a Masjid at southeast of pudumadam. Also there are a few temples and a Church in the west street. People are pride and united irrespective of religion.
Culture
Since majority people from Islam religion, they follow strict Islamic culture. Most of the families live in the village are relatives. Hence, during special occasion such as marriage, the majority of the village participates. Keeping a nickname by the family and friends are popular culture. Family members keep nickname if a person name is very big or not being able to pronounce. For example, thurai (king) for boy, muthu (pearl) for girl. Usually, friends keep nickname based on their character, attitude, and personality. For example, if a person short then they usually add ‘kuttai’ (short) followed by a name. They use some peculiar words while speaking Tamil. Words such as Anam (curry), Machal (lazy), Versana (quick), Iythupochu (forgot), Mana (No), Kannapai (slotted spoon), Thavulai (relative), Aayethi (a rare one), andakollei (more), mosu mosu (soft) etc.,
Marine Field Research Centre
Madurai Kamaraj University has set up ‘Marine Ecotoxicology Field Research Facility’ at Pudumadam, is funded by MoES, New Delhi, for the development of seawater quality criteria for coral reef environment of the Gulf of Mannar. The Institute for Integrated Coastal Area and Marine Management, Chennai, an agency under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has sought a report from the Madurai Kamaraj University, which has done a study through its Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies at Pudumadam.
