The event is restricted to previously unraced horses. For a period its distance was 1,000 metres, and it was extended to 1,200 metres in 1987.

The Prix Yacowlef was formerly held in early August. It was switched to its present schedule and reverted to 1,000 metres in 2005. The 2016 race was run at Chantilly in November.
