Contents

Description

Privateers and Gentlemen is a historical system set in the swashbuckling "Age of Fighting Sail". Half the rules ("Promotions and Prizes," 32 pages) are role-playing, half ("Heart of Oak," 40 pages) are for naval miniatures, and a third book ("Tradition of Victory," 32 pages) is a historical sourcebook for the period. The player characters' abilities are skill-based. The game includes a detailed section on creating believable NPCs and a GM's screen.

Publication history

Privateers and Gentlemen was designed by Jon Williams, and was published in 1983 by Fantasy Games Unlimited, as a boxed set with a 40-page book, two 32-page books, a sample character sheet, and a cardstock screen.

The Jack Tar miniature for 19th century, Age of Sail (JT01-JT014) was produced by RAFM for Privateers & Gentlemen.

Reception

Lawrence Schick comments: "The game is very strong on historical detail for those sailors who are in the Royal Navy or are English privateers, but weak for other nationalities."
