Just before he is to marry Therese Du Flos (Ann Harding), French officer Andre Verlaine (Melvyn Douglas) receives a promotion to captain and is posted to a far-flung Chinese penal colony. A year later, Therese makes the arduous journey east to join Andre, and finds him ill and depressed from the difficulties of managing the colony. Therese gets help from Andres friend, Capt. Remy Bandoin (Adolphe Menjou), but, convinced that Andre cant survive, she seeks outside assistance, with dire results.
