Prakkanam is a village in Pathanamthitta district in the state of Kerala, India. It is situated between Omallur and Elanthoor. Rubber is the main crop cultivated in this village. The primary religious beliefs of the villagers are Hinduism and Christianity. Many temples and churches of worship are located in Prakkanam.

Edanattu Bhadrakali Temple

Edanattu Bhadrakali Temple is situated near Prakkanam Junction. Bhadrakali is the principal deity. Ganapathy, Siva, Yogiswara, Yakshi, Rakshas, Chamundeswari and Nagaraja are also worshipped there. Main offerings are Vishnussahasra namarchana, Bhagya sooktharchana, Purusha sooktharchana, Sreesooktharchana, Swayamvararchana, Sathrusamhararchana, Other types of Archanas, Impoli and various types of niraparas. Every year Bhagavatha sapthaham is celebrated on last day of mandalakalam.

Temple's annual festival is celebrated on Makayiram star of Malayalam month Meenam. Padayani is the main art form being performed on festival day, in olden days it extends about 21 days. Kettukazhcha is another peculiarity of festival. Each 'Karas' bring Kettukazhcha and assemble at Temple. Padayanippara Kottakayattam is another ceremony related to Festival. It is the travel of 'OOrali' from the temple to the Maladevar Nada of Padayanippara Malankavu.

Social and spiritual activities: Temple's Sree Bhadra Balagokulam is an organisation for children. Its prime objective is to develop awareness about Hindu philosophy, Vedas, Puranas, etc. Classes are held every Sunday morning from 8.30 am to 10 am. Several art and Sport programmes are included in the regular classes. Many programs are organised in every sessions.Mathru Sangham is another organisation catering to empowering women.

Kaithavana Durga Temple

Another important temple situated in Prakkanam is Kaithavana Durga Temple. It is under the control of Kerala Kshetra Samrakshana Samithi. Durga Devi is the principal deity. Ganapathy, Sasthaav, Yogiswara, Rakshas, Yakshi, Nagaraja and Nagayakshi also worshipped here. There Kottakayattam ceremony is also celebrated.

St. Mary's Orthodox Church (Valiyapalli)

This church is one of the old and famous churches in Kerala, having more than 125 years of history, and also called as Valiya Palli in Malayalam, meaning Big Church. In this church one can see the classical touch of Kerala as well as western architecture so that is the reason Kerala tourism department promoting this church in tourism Map. Our parish is under the diocese of Thumpamon of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church under the spiritual leadership of H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Dydimos I.Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, refers to the section of the St.Thomas Christians of India, that canonically came under Catholicate of the East whose Supreme Head is His Holiness The Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, with headquarters at Devalokam, Kottayam, Kerala, India. Now the head of the malankara Orthodox Church is h.h. Moran mor Basalius Marthoma Paulose II.

Organisations

  • PRARTHANA YOGAMS
  • Prarthana Yogams are group of 20 – 30 families belonging to a certain geographical area of the church. The members of the family get together on Sundays after the Holy Mass for prayer in a home on rotation basis. Gents, ladies and or children can represent their family. At least one member from each family is expected to participate in the yogam. Each Prarthana Yogam has representation in the Managing Committee. Further each Prarthana Yogam will has a Secretary elected from among themselves to co-ordinate the functions of the group. There is a central unit for the Parish as a whole to co-ordinate the groups with an elected General Secretary and President. There are 12 prarthana yogams in the church. The name of the groups are 1. St. Johns Prarthanayogam 2. Mar Baselious Prarthanayogam 3. St. Thomas Prarthanayogam 4. Mar Bahanan Prarthanayogam 5. St. Mathews Prarthanayogam 6. Mar Gregorious Prarthanayogam 7. St. George Prarthanayogam 8. Mar DivannasiousPrarthanayogam 9. St. Peters Prarthanayogam 10. St. Stephens Prarthanayogam 11. St. James Prarthanayogam 12. St. Paul’s Prarthanayogam

  • MARTHAMARIYAM SAMAJAMS
  • Marthmariyam Samajams are prayer groups exclusively for women of the church. There are 5 units of samajams functioning in the church based on geographic area. Each unit meets on Saturday afternoons in homes for Prayer meetings on rotation basis. Each unit has elected Secretaries. There is a centralization at Parish level with president, General Secretary and Joint Secretary. Once in 3 months a joint meeting of the groups is held in the church so as to enable all the members to interact. In addition to the usual prayer meetings on Saturdays, they conduct prayer on Friday mornings(Fiday prayer) Further the Madhyabhagam unit is conducting Wednesday prayer also. 3 days convention is also arranged by them during December. The five units of Marthamariam Samajam are 1. Pallibhagam Samajam 2. Madhyabhagam Samajam 3. Vadakkemala Samajam 4. Padinjarekkara Samajam 5. Padinjaremala Samajam

  • YOUTH MOVEMENT
  • There are 25 members in the unit. The youth league members assist the Managing Committee in various activities related to the church especially the Christmas Carol collection.

  • SUNDAY SCHOOL
  • There are 100 students studying in the Sunday School. A team of 15 members is engaged in teaching them. A unit of O.V.B.S.(Orthodox Vaccation Bible School) is functioning under the auspicious of Sunday School.

  • BALA/BALIKA SAMAJAM
  • A unit of Bala/Balika samajam is also functioning in the parish.

  • SUVISHESHA SANGAM
  • Suvishesha Sangam is an organization to co-ordinate the functioning of all spiritual organizations of the parish. It has a managing committee with President, Vice-president and General Secretary

    Mor Ignatius Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church

    This church is also called Kuttumuruppel Palli. It is about 2 km from the heart of Prakkanam. The church was founded in 1932. The first holy qurbana was offered by Late Rev. F. R. Thomas Parackel, appointed as first Vicar by HG Mor Dionasious Michael, on May 12, 1932. To mark the 75th year of the church's founding, the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations were conducted on 26–29 December 2006. On 29 December 2009 the church published its website.

    Thottupuram St. Mary's Orthodox Church

    This church is situated at the east side of Prakkanam. It was established 101 years ago. E. Thomas Upadesi and E. T. Mathai Upadesi were two great missionaries of the church. Now there are five priests and two nuns among the members of the church.One of the famous church in prakkanam is St Mary's orthodox church.

    Mar Basalius Educational and Charitable Society, Prakkanam (MBECS)

    This is a charitable society registered under the Charitable Act. Its main purpose is to help the poor people who are in need. It gives educational loans, helps the sick, and distributes goats to poor families. Nearly 100 goats were distributed. The Very Reverend James E. Mathew Cor Episcopa Elavunilkunnathil is the current president of the society.

    Volleyball

    Volleyball is the main game played at Prakkanam. There is a volleyball court owned by Chenneerkkara Grama Panchayath. A volley ball academy with a strength of 30 students working here, aiming for some good contribution to Indian volleyball team. The Santhosh sports and arts club formed in the 1950 had a great impact on the young generation developing their sports and cultural activities.

    Tug of War

    This sport event normally occurs during Onam festival. In September 2016 a new "Tug of War court" with national standards was inaugurated in Chenneerkkara Grama Panchayath Stadium.

    Cricket

    Cricket is another popular game in Prakkanam. Even in the rubber plantation we can find children and teenagers playing this sport.

  • Santhosh Sports & Arts Club

    Santhosh Sports & Arts Club (SS&AC) is the oldest cultural club in Prakkanam. For volleyball it was a champions of Pathanamthitta.

    Nanma Arts And Sports Club

    Nanma Arts And Sports Club is a sports-cultural organisation. Its functioning as a promoter of the game volleyball. In the occasions of Onam and Christmas, they actively participate the celebrations. Most of the members in the club are youngsters below an age of thirty. They conduct several sports programs also like "All Kerala Volleyball Tournament".

    Prakkanam Public Library

    Prakkanam Public library is a "A" category library in the village. The library initially started its operations in the year 1972. Presently it has around 8500 books. In the last year library has been renovated and a new 2 storied building has been set up for its smooth functioning.

    Govt. Ayurvedic dispensary Prakkanam

    Providing free medicine and medical treatment. Situated near to Prakkanam Junction (Prakkanam - Elavinthitta road side) opposite to Prakkanam Panchayath Stadium.
