Prüter, also Pruter or Prueter ( [ˈpʁyːtɐ]) is a German last name which possibly derives from a personal name formed with a cognate of Old English prut meaning ‘proud’.
In effect the names Prüter and Pruter are deflected from Low German (Plattdeutsch) "prutern", what means "to botch, to scamp" (nachlässig arbeiten). Members of the family originate from Mecklenburg mostly.
