Analysis
After his apprenticeship in Venice and Rome, El Greco, turned to the production of portraits, among which is this half-length bust on an undefined background. El Greco did not have to meet in person the theologian Diego de Covarrubias, he died the same year he came to Toledo, but painted this portrait after and print by Alonso Sanchez Coello in 1574.
It highlights the serenity of the sitter, who held senior positions in the church hierarchy. The male figure appears in the center. He wears a pectoral cross, held by a white ribbon at chest height. This cross of gold and emeralds, in the form of a Latin cross, is a symbol of dignity, typical of the bishop.
