History

The school dates back to the nineteenth century when Portlethen was a small fishing village. The first school building was what is now the Police Station. The school moved to the building more recently used as the Community Centre, which was built in 1860. The buildings were demolished in March/April 2007, after the centre moved to the new Portlethen Academy.

The earliest entry in any log book in the school is from 16 January 1874, when both primary and secondary scholars were enrolled. An additional classroom was added in 1876.

In 1962, a new primary block (the current building) was built, opening on 6 March. There were 103 pupils occupying rooms 1 to 3 and a room behind the hall, now the Nursery. In 1975 an extension was built to accommodate a rising roll (then 212) and a further extension was added in 1978. By this time secondary pupils were bussed to Mackie Academy until Portlethen Academy opened in 1987.

Since then the building has remained as it was apart from minor improvements in the infant entrance, upstairs infant areas, new toilets, new huts, window sections replaced, a new library and ICT suite.

Future

In 2006, despite having a larger building, Portlethen Primary School had a smaller school roll than Fishermoss Primary School, the other primary school in Portlethen.

There has been much argument about the future of Portlethen Primary School, and its current condition. The building was in a state of bad repair, but there have been considerable improvements to the internal fabric. It is too small for the anticipated increase in roll from the new housing scheme across the A90 - Hillside / Leathen Fields. There have been many meetings on the future of the school, and currently two options are being considered:

  • A: Move current Primary School across A90 Dual Carriageway, to a new site near the new houses being developed in Hillside, Portlethen.
  • B: Build new school adjacent to current school in playground, and build another school across the A90 for pupils of Hillside and adjacent area.
  • It has now been confirmed (Oct'09) - by letter from the Local Authority to the local Community Council - that Portlethen will be a three school town. There will be a new school at Hillside and the two current schools will have ongoing maintenance works performed.

It was widely thought that the new primary school would be built, like the new Academy, as a PPI scheme, but the new Scottish Government abolished this scheme in 2007.

    Senior Leadership Team

The Senior staff are in charge of the day-to-day running of the school. As of May 2010, they are:

  • Head Teacher: Mrs Garnes
  • Depute Head Teachers: Mrs McKechnie and Ms Weston
  • Support Manager CSN : Mrs Thompson-Wright
  • The Current headmistress of Fishermoss Primary School, the other primary school in Portlethen was Depute Head Teacher at Portlethen Primary for around 10 years.
