Popham Beach State Park is a state park on the Atlantic Ocean in Phippsburg, Sagadahoc County, Maine. The park occupies a portion of the Popham Beach shoreline that stretches between the mouths of the Kennebec and Morse rivers. The park offers lifeguard-supervised swimming, kayaking, and fishing.

HoursEdit

Popham Beach State Park is open year round, 9 AM - Sunset daily. The park charges a fee to enter.

PetsEdit

The Maine department of Agriculture, Conservation, and forestry (Maine ACF) states that dogs are allowed on Popham state beach from October 1st to March 31st.

ErosionEdit

Popham Beach suffers significant erosion issues, especially in the winter. There have been several efforts made to stop the erosion, including placing large boulders designed to hold off the surf.

HistoryEdit

The state park sits near Fort Popham, a Civil War-era coastal defense fortification at the mouth of the Kennebec River. Excavations continue each summer for artifacts of the short lived Popham Colony, the first colony in what would come to be New England.
