    Prior to 1974, Hitchin had its own council, Hitchin Urban District Council, but in 1974 this became part of North Hertfordshire District Council. There are five wards in Hitchin: Walsworth, Oughton, Highbury, Priory, and Bearton.

    Parliament

    The Hitchin constituency was established in 1885 and dissolved in 1983, when it was renamed Hertfordshire North. In 1997, a new constituency, Hitchin and Harpenden, was created.
