This is a list of the political make-up of principal local and regional authorities, commonly known as local councils, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, following the 5 May 2016 local government elections. There are 418 principal authorities in the UK: 27 county councils, 55 unitary authorities, 32 London boroughs, 36 Metropolitan boroughs, 201 districts, 32 Scottish unitary authorities, 22 Welsh unitary authorities, 11 Northern Ireland districts, the Corporation of the City of London and the Council of the Isles of Scilly. This list does not include parish and town councils, the lowest tier of local government with limited powers.

  • County councils

  • ALL 27 county councils have whole councils up for election in May 2017.
  • District councils

  • No district councils are up for election in May 2017.
  • London borough councils

  • No London boroughs will be up for election until May 2018.
  • The London Assembly is (together with the elected Mayor of London) the governing body for the Greater London Authority.

    Metropolitan borough councils

  • Doncaster has whole council up for election in May 2017.
  • Unitary authorities (England)

  • 7 Unitary authorities in England will have ALL their seats up for election in May 2017.
  • Unitary authorities (Scotland)

  • ALL Scottish unitary authorities are up for election in May 2017.
  • Unitary authorities (Wales)

  • ALL Welsh unitary authorities are up for election in May 2017.
  • Northern Ireland

  • No councils in Northern Ireland will be up for election until May 2019.
