History
Policoro was built after a series of destruction of previous Greek cities of Siris and Heraclea. In 280 BC, the territory was the scene of a famous bloody battle where the Romans were defeated by Pyrrhus. During the middle ages, the city was gradually depopulated, and only a little village called Policoro (Πολύχωρον meaning "large place" in Greek) was maintained. Later the village grew around a Baronial palace, belonged among other noble families, the Berlingieri family. Only after 1950, thanks to the efforts to reclaim swampy and unhealthy land, and redistributed land ownership, Policoro rapidly grew and reached the municipal autonomy.
