Pokharel or Pokhrel (Nepali:पोख्रेल/पोखरेल) is a surname used by certain subgroup belonging to the Brahmin caste, Kshetri and natives of Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Myanmar. They are believed to be the direct descendant of Rishi Aatreya(आत्रेया), one of the Saptarishis (Seven Great Sages).

Pokhrel is a sub caste referred to as थर (thar) in the Nepalese community. The pokhrel has fourfold divisions: Paani pokhrel and Dudh Pokhrel.
Religion
Pokhrel people are the decedents of Khas people of the ancient Khas kingdom of the western Nepal and follow Hinduism. Under the caste system of the Khas people, e.g. Bahun, Chettri, Bhakuni, Thakuri, etc., Pokhrel surname fall under the Bahun and Chettri category.
Culture
The Pokhrel community adheres to the traditional Hindu-Nepali Brahmanic culture. Originally from the central-hilly region of Nepal, which encompasses districts such as Parbat, Pokhara, Gorkha, and Syangja, the Pokhrel population has since dispersed widely across Nepal and into neighboring India.
