History

PlayerOne (in camel case) was a membership option available at Playdium. The membership no longer exists and is now replaced by Scene at many other locations. Today, Player One refers to Cineplex's gaming division.

Cinescape

Cinescape is an arcade brand available at 77 Cineplex locations across Canada. It replaces Techtown, the brand formerly used by Famous Players and Playdium.

Playdium

Playdium is a large family entertainment centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It launched as Sega City @ Playdium on September 7, 1996 at a cost of CA$17 million. A partnership with Sega GameWorks, it featured many arcade games from that company such as Daytona USA, and eight-player racing setups for Indy 500 (as Virtua Indy) and Manx TT Super Bike. In 1999, the centre was renamed to Playdium. Indy 500 remains available today.

Playdium is situated on a site of 11 acres (480,000 sq ft) in Mississauga near Square One Shopping Centre. The main building is 40,000 square feet (3,700 m2) and includes over 200 attractions. A baseball dome, formerly with a Toronto Blue Jays partnership, operates year-round and has nine variable-speed batting cages. Some arcade games include Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, Luigi's Mansion Arcade, Pac-Man's Arcade Party and Pump It Up 2015 Prime. However, Playdium has faced criticism from arcade visitors over its arcade game maintenance. Play credit and tickets for games are loaded on a digital game card, a more reliable system compared to traditional token coins and paper tickets. Credit can be purchased in units to use at any time or in time blocks of two hours. While all games require credit, redemption games cannot use time blocks and may also award digital tickets to successful players. A few other machines also cannot use time blocks. The outdoors include a go-kart race course spanning 1.2 miles (1.9 km), an 18-hole miniature golf, and Water Wars.

There is also a Megabytes fast food restaurant on the gaming floor and a full-service mezzanine diner. Megabytes now features marketing similar to Cineplex concession stands and OutTakes restaurants, though at lower prices.

The company operated four Playdium locations at its peak: Mississauga, Toronto (in the Festival Hall that also houses Scotiabank Theatre Toronto), Edmonton (inside the West Edmonton Mall) and Burnaby (inside Metropolis at Metrotown). Today, only the Mississauga centre remains, though the company did operate smaller arcades such as Cinescape and Xscape in former locations. The Rec Room will serve as a spiritual successor to Playdium near the former Toronto location and at the former Edmonton location. The company also operates The Playdium Store, which retails arcade games and various other home entertainment solutions.

The Rec Room

The Rec Room is a chain of family entertainment centres owned by Cineplex. It competes against Dave & Buster's. The first location opened on September 15, 2016 in the South Edmonton Common retail park in Edmonton, Alberta. A second location will open in the West Edmonton Mall this year, replacing the former Target. This marks the company's first launch of a large family entertainment centre in the mall after the closure of Playdium Edmonton years ago. Two more locations will open in the near future: one at the Roundhouse Park in Toronto, Ontario and another at the Masonville Place shopping mall in London, Ontario. The Toronto location is near Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, which has a smaller Cinescape arcade and formerly housed a Playdium in the same complex, while the London location replaces Target Canada.

Xscape

Xscape (stylized as "XSCAPE") Entertainment Centre is Cineplex's brand for its latest arcades. It is currently available at 26 cinemas, most consisting of large locations with extra amenities such as Xscape parties and a lounge.

Play credit and tickets for games are loaded on a digital Xscape game card, which can be used at any XSCAPE location across the country. These are more reliable compared to traditional token coins and paper tickets. It is possible to earn Scene points and bonus digital tokens when purchasing or refilling an XScape card at the prize centre.

While all games deduct play credit, only redemption games may award digital tickets to congratulate successful players. In the Canadian province of Quebec, arcade games cannot distribute prizes based on luck, as most redemption games do. This means that Xscape locations in Quebec, which include StarCité Montréal and Cinémas Cineplex Laval, only offer traditional arcade games and games of skill. These locations lack a prize centre, so Xscape cards can be purchased at the box office and XD Dark Ride theatre, respectively.
