Origin

Pisal clans, like other Maratha clans, claim a mythic origin. Pisals claim to be Marathas of Kshatriya Aryan origin. Alternately, there are claims that Pisal Maratha Clan traces their Descendancy Back to the Suryavanshi Chalukyas.

History

Pisals were deshmukhs of two hundred villages of Wai (Satara District) under the Sultanate of Deccan. Later when Shivaji created the Maratha Empire, they joined him as bargir and shiledar warriors. Pisal clan had rivalry with other deshmukhs like the Khopade and More before Shivaji era. The Pisal deshmukh were powerful sardars of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji, and Rajaram. On 19 October 1689,Suryajirao Pisal, Ozarde's Patil, was a relative of Rajaram, the mighty sardar proved traitor to Maratha Empire by his selfish deeds (As Suryaji Pisal opened gate of Fort Raygad being Killedar (Ruler of Fort), when Moghals gave him bribe and convinced him for the Deshmukhi Rights of Wai Pargana. Wai Pargana of that time was also under administration of Pisals Brotherhood. All this act of Pisal resulted into Defeat of Marathas and Moghals arrested Maharani Yesubai and Prince Shahu, both respectively were Wife and Son of Sambhaji) and Pisals' glory had received strong blow in Marathas. Though he proved traitor, his descendants were supported by Shahu and retained their Sardarki (knightship ). Pisals also took an active part to build the Maratha Empire, including serving in the third Battle of Panipat in the year of 1761.

The Pisal clan dominated in Ozarde, Bavdhan, (Wai), Gove Digar(Satara) and Ghonashi, Karawadi, Yede Machhindragad, Chorade(Taluka Karad), Plashi and Morbend(New Village, Formerly part of Karanjkhop) of Koregaon and Pisalwadi near Shirwal (Khandala) of Satara District). Also one more Pisalwadi near Kaldhari(Purandar) of Pune District. These Pisals were shifted from Satara to Pune.
