Pietro Garinei (1 February 1919 – 9 May 2006) was an Italian playwright, actor, and songwriter.

Biography

Garinei was born at Trieste and graduated in pharmacy. As a journalist of the Corriere dello Sport, he met Sandro Giovannini, with whom he formed a stable duo started with the foundation of the humour newspaper Cantachiaro in 1944, followed by others during World War II.

Garinei after the conflict collaborated with Italian Radio. In 1949 he debuted as playwright, and in 1952 he introduced the musical comedy in Italy with Attanasio cavallo vanesio, featuring Renato Rascel. Always in collaboration with Giovannini, he wrote numerous musicals such as Un paio d'ali, Ciao Rudy, Rugantino, Aggiungi un posto a tavola. Actors who played in their comedies include Nino Manfredi, Gino Bramieri, Sandra Mondaini, Walter Chiari, Domenico Modugno, Massimo Ranieri, Raffaella Carrà, Marcello Mastroianni, Giulio Scarpati, Nancy Brilli and many others.

The duo also wrote lyrics for songs, including "Arrivederci Roma" and "Domenica è sempre domenica".

He died in Rome in 2006.
