Bellemare previously played for Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he won the Swedish Championship twice in 2013 and 2014.

On 11 June 2014, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Bellemare to a one-year contract. He scored his first NHL goal later that year, on 22 October, against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Later in his rookie season of 2014–15, he signed a two-year contract extension with the club on 2 March 2015. Bellemare was awarded the "A" (alternate captain) on 2 March 2017.

Bellemare participated at the 2010 IIHF World Championship as a member of the French national team. He was also named to the French roster for competition at the 2014 IIHF World Championship. In the nation's opening group game on 9 May 2014, Bellemare scored the game-winning shootout goal to give France a 3–2 victory over Canada, France's second-ever victory over the Canadians in 83 years.

Bellemare's father was born on the French overseas Caribbean island of Martinique. His sister, Rose-Eliandre Bellemare, is an artistic gymnast; she participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He is fluent in Swedish.
