Philip Sheffield is a British opera singer tenor who has performed all over the world including Royal Opera, London, La Scala Milan and La Monnaie Brussels among others.

He was born in 1960 in Nairobi, was educated at Maidenhead Grammar school, Trinity College Cambridge and both the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Before becoming an opera singer he was a member of The Swingle Singers and made recordings as a session and jazz singer, including being the polar bear in the best selling video of Raymond Briggs "The Bear" by Howard Blake

As an opera singer he is best known for his creation of slightly off the wall characters such as Terry Bond in Benedict Mason's opera "Playing Away", Fenton in "63 Dream Palace" by Hans Jurgen Von Bose and Alonso in "The Tempest" by Thomas Ades

Other interests

Philip is also a qualified tennis coach and keen cyclist and walker. He climbed Kilimanjaro in 2005.

He is married to coloratura-soprano Eileen Hulse, and has a daughter Lucy who is studying history at the University of Durham.
