Taxonomy

The Petrosina were first established by Nicole Boury-Esnault and Monique Van Beveren in 1982. They are classified under the order Haplosclerida of the class Demospongiae.

Description

Members of Petrosina are characterized by isotropic skeletons. The spicules are almost always smooth oxeas or strongyles. There is no differentiation between primary and secondary spicule tracts or fibers, and the latter lack orientation.

All members of the suborder are presumed to be oviparous. They are also usually hard or incompressible in consistency. Spicule density is high with little to no spongin present.

Families

These families are classified under Petrosina:

  • Calcifibrospongiidae Hartman, 1979
  • Petrosiidae Van Soest, 1980
  • Phloeodictyidae Carter, 1882
