Prior to his appointment at AIG, Zaffino served as chief executive officer of Marsh, and chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies' Risk & Insurance Services segment, which includes Marsh, a risk advisor and insurance broker, and Guy Carpenter and Company, a reinsurance intermediary.
Early life and education
Zaffino holds a BA in economics from Boston College and an MBA in finance from New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He holds the CPCU and Associate in Reinsurance designations.
Career
Before his tenure at AIG, Zaffino's career included several leadership roles at Marsh & McLennan Companies, a professional services firm that ranked #222 on the 2016 Fortune 500 list. Prior to becoming CEO of Marsh, he was president and CEO of Guy Carpenter. Zaffino was appointed to lead Marsh in early 2011, and his responsibilities were expanded to include Risk & Insurance Services in early 2015. Under Zaffino's leadership, Marsh built an analytics solution, delivered through a mobile platform using real-time data. Zaffino also oversaw the expansion of Marsh & McLennan Agency, which serves clients in the small- and mid-market brokerage marketplace.
Before joining Guy Carpenter in 2001, he served in several senior executive positions at a GE Capital portfolio company specializing in alternative risk insurance and reinsurance.
Boards
Zaffino is a member of the board of directors of the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund, which provides assistance to families of New York City police and fire personnel (including Emergency Medical Services and Port Authority) who have been killed in the line of duty. He also serves on the board of overseers for The School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science of St. John’s University.
