Career

Almqvist started playing guitar after hearing the Beatles. His introduction to jazz came from his father's record collection. In high school, he resolved to pursue a career in music. He took four lessons in London from guitarist Ike Isaacs, which was long enough for Almqvist to consider him a large influence.

Almqvist and guitarist Ulf Wakenius founded the acoustic jazz duo Guitars Unlimited in 1980. They appeared often on Swedish television and toured in Europe. From 1982–'83, Almqvist worked with violinist Svend Asmussen. In the 1990s, he started a trio that toured with Art Farmer. As a leader, he made an album with pianist Horace Parlan in 1997.

Almqvist died at the age of 57 in early April 2015, during the Easter weekend.
