Pervaiz Kaleem is a Pakistani film screenwriter and a director, based in Lahore. He has to his credit some of Lollywood's biggest film hits like Gunnah (1990), But Shikkan (1994) and Pehla Sajda. Pervaiz Kaleem is often credited with revitalizing the Pakistani film industry during the mid-1990s, a period during which he directed hits such as Gunnah, Jaltay Badan and But Shikkan. Pervaiz has launched many newcomers into the film world including actors Saud, Faisal Qureshi, Seemi Zaidi, Kubra Khanam, Safeer Ali (his brother), Bilal Khan.

Early life

Born in Shahalmi Market area, Lahore to Haji Hassan Ali Rajput, a cinema owner, and a businessman migrated from Saharanpur, British India. After his birth, his parents moved to Krishan Nagar, Lahore. Young Pervaiz Kaleem was popular in his town for his personal library of books at his own home.

At the age of eight, he was admitted to the sixth class in a well-known school of Lahore, the cathedral school. After completing his matriculation (10th grade) school, Pervaiz began attending Government College of Lahore in Lahore where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Career

In his early years in Lahore, he found a job at Evernew Studios, Lahore. He worked there as a peon, trolley man and then one day he was able to make a contact with famous film director Agha Hussaini. He assisted him for 5 years. Pervaiz Kaleem managed to write the dialogue for a minor film for Rupees 50. Occasionally, he used to work as an assistant-director.

In 1987, Pervaiz started a movie as a film director and a writer named Jazbaat, but could not complete it due to production problems with this film. In 1988, Pervaiz signed a movie Bazar-e-Husn as a writer and he became known in the Pakistani film industry. In 1993, Pervaiz and his brother Hamid Ali started a production named Ali Arts Productions. Their first movie under this banner was Gunnah (Sin) which was a blockbuster hit in 1993. Their second production was Jaltay Badan (1994). In this film Pervaiz introduced his brother Safeer Ali also known as Aqeel. Unfortunately this film did not give them good business. In 1994, Pervaiz made a hit film But Shikken. This film made him known in Pakistan. Pervaiz Kaleem feels that he is a Pakistani nationalist. He feels a film screenwriter should explore subjects with a broad base when writing scripts and the film viewers should interpret these stories with an open mind.

Pervaiz Kaleem is the father of the editor and director Adeel pk, the father and son duo have recently worked together to write scripts in movies such as Mujhe Chand Chahiye (2000), Moosa Khan (2001), Pehla Sajda, Shiddat, Zill-e-Shah (2008) and Bhai Log (2011).

Personal life

Pervaiz was married to a lady named Anisa with whom he had four children- Adeel Kaleem also known as Adeel pk, Zain Kaleem, Aman Kaleem and Mahnoor Kaleem.
