The club play in Liga Indonesia First Division. Persewon are from an isolated part of West Papua. Because of the lack of playing facilities their climb from the Third to First Division has been made on the island of Java where training facilities and stadiums are more readily available.On Java island they have a large following who call themselves "Wondamania".
