Permatang Pauh is a town in Seberang Perai, the hinterland portion of the island-state of Penang, Malaysia. There are two institutions of higher learning located in Permatang Pauh, namely a campus of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Politeknik Seberang Perai.

Permatang Pauh town is a town beside the longest expressway of Malaysia in Penang. It is located in the central of Penang state, in the middle of the Bukit Mertajam and Kepala Batas. The Permatang Pauh highway is a flyover highway and a diamond shaped interchange. A U-Turn road also had been made below the north south highway to let the travelers have a back turn to the Petron (formerly Esso) petrol station, flats and some shops here.

Permatang Pauh is also the hometown of the head of Penang, the Penang Governor since 2001. Yet he is now residented in Jalan Utama on the Penang Island. His residence is only near to Karpal Singh house, the member of parliament of Bukit Gelugor, Jelutong previously. There are also several Chinese schools near Permatang Pauh. Those are Lay Keow and Chung Hwa. The Butterworth primary school name is called Chung Hwa. The trunk road to Ipoh and Bukit Mertajam is also found here. It is located 160 kilometres from Ipoh and 10 kilometres from Bukit Mertajam. While with the expressway, it is 335 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur and 90 kilometres to Alor Star. People is to start ramping into the Seberang Jaya highway flyover to go down to the capital after coming out Permatang Pauh Interchange.

The Permatang Pauh highway town interchange is the fifth largest highway interchange in Penang after the Perai and Seberang Jaya interchange. The JPJ in Seberang Jaya exit here is the Permatang Pauh JPJ, there is not Sebarang Jaya JPJ. Similarly, the Petronas petrol station beside of the JPJ is also belonged to Permatang Pauh while the rear Seberang Jaya's Petronas is on the opposite.

The constituency of Permatang Pauh is one of the 29 seats held by Parti Keadilan Rakyat in the current Parliament. The constituency covers areas such as Seberang Jaya, Permatang Pasir, Penanti, Kubang Semang, Bandar Perda, Tanah Liat, Guar Perahu and Mengkuang Titi. It was represented by Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy Prime Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, who was elected in the by-election in 2008. Anwar previously served as MP for Permatang Pauh from 1982 to 1999.

Due to the Federal Court's decision to not overturn Anwar's guilty verdict in the sodomy case, the seat for Permatang Pauh was declared vacant due to disqualification of the incumbent MP. A by-election held on the 7th of May 2015 was won by Anwar's wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail who also previously held the seat from 1999 to 2008 when Anwar was ineligible to contest due to his imprisonment until 2004 and the subsequent disqualification from contesting elections until 2008.
