It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Central Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 2,913 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 747.83 square kilometres (288.74 sq mi) of which 27.25 km2 (10.52 sq mi) is water. The population density is 3.89 inhabitants per square kilometre (10.1/sq mi).
