Peraceras is an extinct genus of rhinoceros endemic to North America during the Miocene, living from 20.6—10.3 mya and existing for approximately 10.3 million years.

Taxonomy

Peraceras was named by Cope (1880). Its type is Peraceras superciliosum. It was assigned to Rhinocerotidae by Cope (1880) and Carroll (1988); and to Aceratheriinae by Prothero (1998).

Morphology

Four specimens were examined by M. Mendoza, C. M. Janis, and P. Palmqvist as well as M. Fortelius and J. Kappelman for estimated body mass with the results as follows:

  • Specimen 1: 98.7 kg (220 lb)
  • Specimen 2: 315.7 kg (700 lb)
  • Specimen 3: 408.6 kg (900 lb)
  • Specimen 4: 121.7 kg (270 lb)
