Peace, Love and Understanding is the second pilot episode of Beavis and Butt-Head, after Frog Baseball. Like creator Mike Judge's other early short cartoons, it was funded by Spike and Mike and shown on MTV's Liquid Television in the early 1990s. Mike Judge stated in an interview that he heavily disliked this particular episode, along with the season 1 episode "Give Blood", which were both conceived on the same day.

Plot

After sniffing glue, Beavis and Butt-Head see a commercial on TV for the "All-Star Monster Truck Thrashathon". They go to the monster truck rally, where a folk singer, David Van Driessen, sings, much to the disgust of the crowd, and gets run over by a monster truck. (Van Driessen would re-emerge in later episodes as Beavis and Butt-Head's teacher.) The monster truck then goes out of control and hits a row of port-a-potties, releasing and angering Sterculius, the Roman god of feces. Sterculius goes up into the sky and the arena gets covered in poop. Then, mocking the ending of Frog Baseball, the ending shows To be discontinued with the credits following.

Censorship

The beginning of the episode where Beavis and Butt-Head sniff glue and make racist remarks about the Tom Vu-esque informercial spokesman was later edited out by MTV, along with a shot of audience members giving Mr. Van Driessen the finger and Butt-Head asking a woman if she wants to sniff some glue.

Home video

The censored version of the episode was released in Australia only in 2002 on the final VHS volume "Still Stupid". The glue-sniffing scene was released on the UK-only VHS volume "Too Dumb for TV". The complete uncensored version of the episode was released on the "Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation Volume 1" VHS.
