Mahony made his Waterford debut during the 2011 and immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. A Munster medalist in the minor grade, Mahony has yet to claim any silverware at senior level.

At club level Mahony is a two-time county club championship medalist with Ballygunner.

Mahony's early hurling career was nurtured at De La Salle College Waterford. Here he won a set of Dr. Harty Cup and All-Ireland winners' medals in 2008.
University
Mahoney is currently studying at University College Cork. He won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal in 2012 following a victory over the Cork Institute of Technology.
Club
Mahony has played with Ballygunner since an early age.
Following several impressive performances in the intermediate grade during the 2009 season, Mahony was promoted to the senior team and immediately broke onto the starting team. He played a key role in Ballygunner's 1-17 to 0-19 defeat of Lismore in a replay of the county championship decider.
Ballygunner surrendered their championship title to De La Salle the following year, however, in 2011 Mahony lined out in a third consecutive championship decider. A 1-19 to 0-6 defeat of Tallow gave Mahony a second county club championship medal.
Inter-county
Mahony's inter-county career began as a member of the Waterford minor hurling team. He won a Munster medal in this grade in 2009 as Waterford defeated Tipperary by 0-18 to 1-13.
In 2011 Mahony made his senior debut in a National Hurling League game against Dublin. He was later included in Waterford's championship starting fifteen and made his championship debut against Limerick in a Munster semi-final. Although his debut season ended without any silverware, Mahony ended the year as an All-Star nominee.
Mahony won his first National Hurling League title with Waterford in 2015 after a 1-24 to 0-17 win against Cork in the final on 3 May. On 9 May 2015, Mahony suffered a broken shin bone playing for Ballygunner that will rule him out of action for the rest of the year.
Inter-provincial
Mahony has also lined out with Munster in the inter-provincial series of games. He played with the provincial selection in 2012, however, he has yet to win a medal.
Personal life
Mahony is nephew to former inter county hurler Billy O'Sullivan and current Waterford hurler Shane O'Sullivan. His brother Philip Mahony is currently also a panel member on the Waterford senior hurling team.
