After creator Stephen Hillenburg resigned in 2004, Tibbitt took the position of showrunner for SpongeBob. Hillenburg, who continued to review episodes and offer suggestions to the series' production crew after resigning, eventually returned to the show in 2015 as an executive producer, now having greater creative input and attending crew meetings. In 2015, Vincent Waller, creative director of the series, and Marc Ceccarelli, a writer and storyboard director for the series, took Paul Tibbitt's place as supervising producer and showrunner. It was also announced that Tibbitt would leave the series after season 9 to work on the third SpongeBob movie (which is being produced without the involvement of the show's crew by a separate crew), with no plans to return following the movie.
