Biography

Patricio Cuevas-Parra was born in Chile. He holds two master's degrees: one in International Relations and another in Children' Rights from the University of Fribourg and Institut universitaire Kurt Bösch (IUKB), Switzerland. He is a Child Rights advocate that manages research and information analysis on social justice issues affecting children. Mr. Cuevas-Parra has assessed relevant national laws and regulations in the light of international frameworks and instruments and has translated findings into social programs to improve the quality of life of children in developing countries.

Mr. Cuevas-Parra has published six books on the topics of children’s rights, citizenship and rights of women, the situation of women in Aceh after the 2004 Asia tsunami, the state of children’s rights in Lebanon 20 years after the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and child participation modules for practitioners.

Mr Cuevas-Parra has a keen interest in looking at cutting-edge child rights advocacy tools and models. He has led an unprecedented child-led alternative report on child rights issues to the United Nations Human Rights Universal Periodic Review, engaging 35 children in producing the report that was submitted on March 2010.

Mr Cuevas-Parra led a participatory process where children were given a space to write a book with their personal stories based on the principles outlined in Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Children used that publication to influence their communities, peers and government officials in order to contribute to a more just society.

Patricio Cuevas-Parra created gender-sensitive workshops for single parents in the Indonesia post tsunami. The aim of the workshop developed by Mr Cuevas-Parra is to show that everybody can be a great mother or father, despite the cultural conditioning that exists in most male-dominated societies. The workshops were developed with the conviction that the stability and quality of role models are more important than the gender.

For the past 12 years, Patricio has worked in Chile, Ecuador, New York, Indonesia and Lebanon for non-profit relief and development organisations. His focus has been to generate public awareness of the problems that affect poor communities, such as discrimination, social exclusion, injustice and inequality. He has developed advocacy and peace-building strategies focused on promoting civil participation of the poorest, excluded and discriminated against populations, in order to influence social justice and changes in public policy in a multi-religious and conflict-prone context.

Mr. Cuevas-Parra won the 2008 World Vision Award for Innovation in Advocacy for his determination and coordinated actions to end violence against children and to place World Vision at the forefront of advocacy and child protection efforts.
